The audience heard from funding agency representatives Gene Henry, Acting Associate Director of Science for Nuclear Physics in DOE’s Office of Science, and Brad Keister, Program Director for Nuclear Physics at the NSF.
Following Deshpande’s report, he announced the UEC election results introducing Helen Caines as the UEC’s chair-elect; Christine Aidala, Mei Bai, and Jiangyong Jia as newly elected UEC members; and Megan Connors and Terry Tarnowsky as newly elected Student/Post-doc members. He also thanked the UEC members who concluded their three-year terms: Rene Bellwied, Ondrej Chvala, Henry Crawford, Renee Fatemi, Andre Mischke, Monica Sharma, and Charles Whitten.

The Old Dominion University Experimental Nuclear Physics group is seeking a postdoctoral associate to support our experimental program at the nearby Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (Jefferson Lab). The group (consisting of professors M. Amaryan, S. Bueltmann, G. Dodge, C. Hyde, S. Kuhn, and L. Weinstein plus 2-3 postdocs, 10-12 graduate students and Jefferson Lab affiliates) is one of the largest research groups at Jefferson Lab. We are leading several experiments with the newly upgraded 12 GeV beam at the lab, including investigations of nucleon structure, nucleon-nucleon correlations in nuclei, hadron spectroscopy and searches for Physics Beyond The Standard Model. We are also developing and building detectors and targets for these experiments and are working towards the realization of a future electron-ion collider. Depending on the candidate’s experience and preferences, he/she would contribute to current DVCS measurements in Hall A, studies of short range correlations in Halls A, B and C, and/or analysis of existing data from Hall B in hadron spectroscopy. Christine Aidala: The summer after my freshman year in college, I knew I wanted to do research, and I ended up working in a low-energy nuclear physics lab at my school. I enjoyed it, and as one thing led to another, I spent the next few summers doing research in different areas of nuclear and particle physics. I first got involved in my current field of proton structure for my senior thesis as an undergrad, doing simulation studies as part of a proposal to polarize the proton beam at the HERA electron-proton collider in Hamburg, Germany. Unfortunately, the proton beam there was never polarized, but I was lucky to have the opportunity a couple years later to become involved in RHIC just as its polarized proton program was starting up.
A nuclear physicist hailing from Los Alamos National Lab, Christine Aidala is currently stationed at Brookhaven National Laboratory to be near her latest experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. We recently caught up with Christine and got the download on what it’s like working at the RHIC, the proton spin puzzle, and her favorite musical composition — but more on that in a bit.

The University of Tennessee is seeking candidates for a postdoctoral position in the experimental low-energy nuclear physics program. The successful candidate will lead the development and implementation of
a new high-resolution neutron detector for decay and reaction studies.
This research program is funded by the Stewardship Science Academic Alliances with DOE-NNSA. The candidate should have a Ph.D.
(or will soon graduate) and demonstrable experience in experimental nuclear physics or a similar field.
Review of applications will begin on September 15, 2016 and will continue until the position is filled.

Prior to the conclusion of the weeklong event, Associate Laboratory Director for Nuclear and Particle Physics Steve Vigdor recognized numerous achievements made by RHIC scientists and staff in the last year and then presented the long-term strategic vision for RHIC. The department is making great progress in implementing luminosity upgrades that would enable RHIC-II science, Vigdor said, including work on the Electron Beam Ion Source (EBIS), scheduled for completion in FY10; the implementation of stochastic cooling and electron lenses, expected to be in place by 2012 and 2013, respectively; and planning for the STAR detector’s heavy flavor tracker, which received DOE’s Critical Decision 0 (CD-0) in FY09 and is hoping to receive CD-1 in the fall.

A startling discovery at CERN in the late 1980s demonstrated that this wasn’t the case at all. Since then physicists have been trying to figure out how the subnuclear particles inside the proton do account for its observed total spin of ½ and we still don’t know. The proton’s spin, by the way, is what enables the medical technique of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
